Everything is Fine
2020 / MIXED MEDIA INSTALLATION
“Everything is Fine” is a mirror, held up towards the iconography of consumer imagery and was built to highlight the strangeness of our relationship with media narratives. Creating a fictitious soda brand, it personified and typified the lifestyle branding that feeds our feeds. The room was a reaction to the shift in marketing tactics during the consecutive lockdowns that adapted to our newfound situation. In response to intrusive and pervasive displays of product hawking, “Everything is Fine” became a way to cope and respond with equivalent intensity, discomfort, and obsessive-compulsion.
This installation involved designing and developing a wallpaper pattern design, then handpainting it into the room. Portraits of a not-so-american icon decorate the walls like revered memorabilia and graphics huddle together as collectibles in this alternate reality. Sculptures are created from found and, funnily enough, collected items.
An accompanying audio experience was created with a musician, Christian Rockeman, to emulate a classic talk radio show, bringing life to this installation.
