2019 / MIXED MEDIA INSTALLATION
Findividual/Pussylure is a site-specific installation building upon itself like the nature of its content - an anthological collection of imagined folklore. As a product of the thought experiment, “what if mermaids were reversed?”It highlights the strange and alarming way in which female presenting bodies are presented in the media. The pieces exist against a background, a backdrop of candy colored undulating water and function as a metaphorical finger pointing at the normalization of hyper sexualization, fetishization and romanticization of the objectified feminine.
Like a storybook, this installation used two 3.75 m walls creating a corner for this world to live in. It starts with designing and developing a wallpaper pattern design, then hand painting it into the interior and exterior sides of the walls. I wanted to create a history, a feigned folklore if the world had been a little bit different. These paintings become the collectible, traversing through time, becoming history.
Barbara, our pussylure on the pedestal, adorns the wall as a trophy - a stuffed, hollow remnant of a once beautiful creature.
An accompanying audio experience was created with a musician, Christian Rockeman, the sounds of a big-band-like record from a strange and distant time.
